Conditioning White
Hydrangea
On receipt of your white hydrangea the first job will be to condition them
properly. This is absolutely essential, as white hydrangeas are an extremely costly cut flower and
you will need them to be at their very best. White hydrangea are conditioned slightly
differently to other cut flowers, so simply follow the step by step guide below for best
results:
-
White hydrangeas drink a lot of water. Cut an inch or two from the bottom of the woody
stems with a sharp knife at a 45° angle.
-
Fill a large bucket, (or a bath tub), with hot water and sterilising solution.
-
Once sterilised, empty the bucket and re-fill with cold water and hydrangea food.
-
Submerge the entire flower in the water, (making sure that all the petals are
under water), and leave for two hours.
-
Strip the lower foliage from the stems, leaving a few just under the flower head if
desired.
-
Sterilise a flower bucket with hot water and sterilising solution.
-
Once sterilised, re-fill the bucket with tepid water and hydrangea food.
-
Plunge the white hydrangea into the bucket with water ¾ the way up the stem and leave
to hydrate over night.
-
Your white hydrangea will be ready to work with in the morning.
Top Tip
Never leave white hydrangea next to a radiator, in a draft, in direct sunlight
or near fresh fruit.
